On Indigenous Peoples' Day 2019, canoes representing Indigenous tribes, families and communities converged on San Francisco Bay and circled Alcatraz Island to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Alcatraz Occupation, led by Indians of All Tribes. In preparation for the Canoe Journey, Indigenous organizers came together on July 11, 2019, in Fremont, Calif., to harvest tule -- a reed-like marsh plant. This tule would later be built into a canoe following Ohlone tradition, and launched on the bay for the Journey.
