In the wake of the police murder of George Floyd, Republik, a German-language magazine in Switzerland, commissioned me to make photographs in Oakland, Calif. to accompany a story about how the history of redlining in the United States has enabled the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on Black and brown communities.

I spent three days in the Oakland flatlands documenting this moment of dissent, gentrification, and environmental injustice -- and, in the midst of it all, hope.
